True Orb Weaver

True Orb Weaver

Thanks to my niece, Stefanie, I found out that this spider is a True Orb Weaver. I came upon him in my hosta plant while photographing butterflies. Hope it doesn’t give anyone nightmares, but I thought he was really cool and watching him weaving and preserving his meal, a bee. Unfortunately, this will be one photo my husband won’t look at.

Wow, Joleen, this spider is gorgeous! I’m fascinated with the bold, almost neon-colored segments of her legs. And is the bright yell part of the unfortunate bumble bee? The web is unusual, too, much more densely woven then the classic pattern. It always amazes me that the spider produces the web strand material in her body and how delicate, yet surprisingly strong the web functions to trap the her prey. Bruce may not have liked this one, but I give it two thumbs up!!

Thanks Ann! I was afraid I made a big mistake posting this spider, but you gave me the reaction I needed and you saw the same thing I saw.
